Young Parents provides pregnant and parenting out-of-school youth, aged 14-21, who have not achieved a high school diploma with a variety of services including: basic education, English as a Second Language and training in parenting, life, and work skills. The program directs young parents receiving public assistance toward long term economic self-sufficiency. While full-time, unsubsidized job placement is the ultimate goal of the program, short term objectives include increased grade or MELT levels, achievement of a GED, return to high school, enrollment in a community college or certificate program or placement into skills training, on-the-job training or paid worksite experience. Extensive support services augment the program.
Based on a recent Young Parents Demonstration grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, the Young Parents Program will also incorporate a new component that will randomly select participants to receive mentoring services focusing on education, career advancement and personal development. The YPD is designed to evaluate the impact of intensive mentoring services on young parents' program outcomes and success rates.
