Worcester YouthBuild Graduation Marks Year of Growth

      Fifteen Worcester YouthBuild students graduated on June 25 at the Crowne Plaza in Worcester. The graduation followed two days after the dedication of this year's project, a sustainable gut-rehab of a 130-year-old house in the Main South neighborhood. Quincy YouthBuild Students Show Carpentry Skills 

      Quincy students Chad Richardson, Daniel Rexford, Renard Lomax, Matthew McGonnigal, Charles Zacharias, Jordan Valle, and Tyler Shuman participated in the 13th annual YouthBuild Carpentry Challenge at the Home Depot in Methuen on May 12. Click here for more.

Brockton and New Bedford Staff, Students and Families Walk to Benefit Hospice

     On April 2 Brockton and New Bedford staff, students and families walked to benefit the Old Colony Hospice, raising $335.  Click here for more.  

Quincy YouthBuild Students Help Beautify State House

      Quincy students were among several groups of volunteers who came to the State House on May 28 for a variety of landscaping projects. On March 12 student Dallas Fox and Fundraiser Suzanne Steward appeared on "Currently in Quincy.". Click here for more and to link to the television segment.

 Salem Students and Staff Express Their Creativity  

        In March students and staff participated in "Hat Day," making hats with a spring theme. April's activity featured making floweres in a "Spring Flower Extravaganza" . Click here for more.

Salem ABE I Students Win Poetry Contest

      Students Kimlam Khor and Roohi Khan were honored at Salem State College for their poems, which were among the winners in the 10th Annual Peace Poetry Contest. Click here for more.

Worcester Teen Parent Receives Recognition 

      YouthBuild student Cynthia Rodriguez was honored at the Worcester Area Teen Pregnancy and Parenting Network Event on April 29.  A mother of three children, she had been an earlier participant in the Young Parents Program.  Click here for more.

TRA Comes Together at Annual Meeting

    TRA staff gathered at Indian Meadows in Westborough on June 12 for the annual State of the State meeting. President/ CEO Paul Gallo announced that Kim Harmon, Vice-President of Operations/ Compliance, will become president July 1. He will continue as part-time CEO. Click here for more.

Brockton Students and Staff Participate in Thanksgiving Food Drive  

For eight years, Brockton ESOL 1 Instructor Carmen Maldonado has collected food to assure a better Thanksgiving Day for families in the community. The response from students and staff at the site yielded two very large boxes of food. Click here to read more.

Salem Partnership With College Gives Students a Head Start

 ABE III students got a head start on college thanks to a partnership between TRA and North Shore Community College. Funded in part by a North Shore Workforce Investment Board grant, the program enabled students to earn NSCC college credits beginning with a one-credit preparatory class entitled “Pathways to College.”  Following that, the students completed a 3-credit Basic Communication course designed to help them complete the essay part of the GED test, as well as compose college essays.

Quincy and Worcester YouthBuild Meet with Legislators at State House Day 

YouthBuild students from Quincy and Worcester were among over 350 young people from 11 state YouthBuild programs who attended the 13th annual YouthBuild Day at the State House on January 27. A student speaker from each program shared their personal stories of transformation. Then each group stood to say a pledge to YouthBuild ideals they had composed, a pledge recited at the beginning of each day.

Restaurant Coupon Book and Board Game to Benefit YouthBuild

At Corporate Suzanne Stewart has been hard at work putting together fundraising projects for our two YouthBuild programs:  “Worcester Cuisine for Less Green,” a restaurant coupon book, and Quincyopoly, the classic game with a local twist. Brockton Hosts Leadership Training for South Shore and Quincy Staff 

Brockton hosted an interactive "Leadership Training" workshop on November 14. Dr. Mev Miller facilitated the 4-hour interactive workshop presented by System for Adult Basic Education Support (SABES) Southeast. All South Shore and two Quincy staff members attended.  Click here to read more.

Worcester Moves Site to New Office Suite

On November 3 workers from Liberty Movers loaded and unloaded five truckloads of desks, equipment and moving crates. They transported them across Main Street to the new location at 2 Foster Street. Staff spent the day setting up shop in their new offices and classrooms. Click here to read more

Donald J. Mancini, CCIM has joined the Board of Directors. Don is Vice President at Kelleher & Sadowsky Associates. He was involved in the recent relocation of TRA-Worcester to its new location.

Brockton ESOL for Employment Program Holds Graduation

They came from Haiti, Cape Verde, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Vietnam and Egypt. But by the end of the 8-week Brockton English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for Employment Program the graduates had become a close knit group of people, helping each other overcome their language barrier.  Click here to read more including a spotlight on students.

Brockton ABE students Learn About Voting at Celebration of Citizenship Event

ABE I and II students were among four dozen first-time voters who attended the “Celebration of Citizenship” event at Brockton Public Library on October 21 as part of their evening class time.   Click here to read more.

Holyoke Young Parents Clients and Children Enjoy Educational Field Trips

As part of their parenting curriculum Young Parents students created lawn games to play with their children and used them at a Family Fun Day in Heritage State Park. In July they visited the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield and to kick off a new book club they toured the Holyoke Public Library.  Click here to read more.

Quincy YouthBuild Students Team with Red Sox at the Brockton Veterans Hospital  

On a sunny August day Quincy YouthBuild students Matt Miller and Ryan Serafini joined with students from four other Boston Coalition YouthBuild in helping volunteers from the Red Sox Foundation, corporate sponsor Covidien and local building tradesmen update Brockton Veterans Hospital recreational facilities Building 23.  Click here to read more.

Quincy YouthBuild Grads Attend Dedication of Germantown Boardwalk to the River

One project of the YouthBuild graduates was a new Boardwalk to the River, providing beach access at the Germantown work site. The boardwalk was officially dedicated on October 8 with TRA graduates and staff, representatives of the Quincy Housing Authority, building trade union members and government officials in attendance.  Click here to read more.

Salem Students and Staff Enjoy Monthly Creative Stress Reduction Activities

In Salem day students and staff participate in monthly Friday afternoon stress-reduction activities. This month for the change of season they made fairy houses using materials found in nature which they had gathered for the project.   Click here to read more.

Worcester and Quincy Youth Builds Attend Wal-Mart Grant Presentation

Worcester and Quincy YouthBuild students and staff joined other members of the Massachusetts YouthBuild Coalition on October 21 for the presentation of $475,000 in grants from the Wal-Mart Foundation.  Click here to read more.

TRA Offers Two New Programs

 Fitchburg is the site of the new MED-ED Program providing youth with the opportunity to earn their GED while training for an exciting career in the medical field. The Pride Career Academy in Worcester is a collaborative venture between Pride Productions, Inc. and TRA, which will furnish GED preparation. Click here to read more.

Salem Staff Training Day Ends with Recess at Work Trip to Ben and Jerry's

On October 3 staff from the North Shore offices came together for training on all of the new software that has been introduced over the past few months - Data Entry, Mavis Beacon, Extralearning and Skill Tutor.
