Through a Young Parents Mentoring Demonstration Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), TRA has been able to incorporate a much-needed mentoring component into its Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) funded Young Parents Program (YPP).

Volunteers from the community are matched with pregnant and parenting youth between the ages of 14 and 21 who are enrolled in YPP. YPP helps these young people attain their high school equivalency certificates, as well as learn parenting, life, and work skills. The mentors provide one-on-one mentoring services that focus on education, career advancement and personal development. They help the students build self-esteem and confidence and attain their goals.

Recently, through its “You Make the Difference!” campaign, TRA has been recognizing volunteer mentors throughout the statewide program for their efforts, dedication and contributions.

THANK YOU, MICHELLE RAMIREZ!

Michelle Ramirez is presented with a “You Make the Difference!” Certificate by TRA-Worcester Mentor Specialist Virginia Tremblay-Murphy (right). According to Virginia, “Michelle has a warm heart and a big smile for everyone. Michelle has been part of the mentoring program for the last year and has had the opportunity to mentor several young women in our Worcester YPP. We are deeply grateful for Michelle’s support and the incredible guidance she has provided to our students.”

THANK YOU, BEATRICE PENA!

Beatrice Pena proudly displays her “You Make the Difference!” Certificate. Beatrice has mentored several young women in the Worcester YPP. In her most recent mentoring relationship, she not only became a trusted friend, but also helped the student obtain her driver’s permit, apply for college financial aid, and took her on a tour of a local college. According to Mentor Specialist Virginia Tremblay-Murphy, “Due to Beatrice’s persistence and encouragement, the YPP student is presently attending Quinsigamond Community College.”
