Youth Programs
ACHIEVE! Youth Opportunity Program provides a comprehensive array of services for out-of-school youth between the ages of 16 and 21. Services include Adult Basic Education/GED preparation, job readiness/employability development training, non-paid work experiences/internships, occupational computer and clerical skills training, leadership development training/opportunities, job development/placement assistance, supportive/follow-up services, and comprehensive guidance, counseling and referral services.
ATTAIN! Pre-GED and GED Prep Progam provides Brockton area out-of-school youth between the ages of 16 and 21 who test between grades 5 and 12 via the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) with the opportunity to increase their reading, language and math skills and/or obtain their GED. Participants also receive training in Work Essential Skills including: job readiness, developmental skills (SCANS) and Money Smart - Financial Literacy Training (FDIC). Additionally, the program offers counseling/case management services and referral to area support services to help participants meet their individual education, employment and life goals.
Career Exploration Program is a cooperative venture between TRA and the Brockton Public Schools Department that provides a comprehensive youth training program for students between the ages of 14 and 19 who attend Ithaka School. The program is designed to help students improve their ability to access the workplace with the ultimate goal of securing part time employment while they are in school. Students receive intake, vocational interest/aptitude assessment, individualized goal setting, orientation, counseling/case management services, life/health/economic literacy skills training, job readiness training, internships, job development/placement, and job support/follow-up services. Additionally, students have the option of participating in Customer Service and Computer Basics Training as well as a summer component.
Pride Career Academy is a collaborative venture between Pride Productions, Inc. and TRA to provide a comprehensive training program for out-of-school youth between the ages of 16 and 21. While working on increasing grade levels and obtaining their GED, youth also participate in media production, career development, work readiness and self-sufficient training with the intent of finding permanent employment leading to economic independence. Work and post-secondary education transition support, adult mentoring, follow-up services, as well as comprehensive guidance, counseling and referral services augment the program.
Skills for Life (click for full description) is a collaborative venture between Saint-Gobain Corporation, Training Resources of America, Inc., and participating school districts. The program is designed to target intermediary and high school students who are having marginal success in school and/or are "at risk" of dropping out. SFL is customized to meet the learning objectives established by each school. Based on individualized needs, customized programming enables students to improve their basic skills in language, reading, writing and/or math or their English speaking capabilities. Additionally, SFL assists students in meeting state testing standards required for high school graduation. Skills for Life features a multi-media, computerized approach to learning that youngsters find very appealing and motivating.
Young Parents provides pregnant and parenting out-of-school youth, aged 14-21, who have not achieved a high school diploma with a variety of services including: basic education, English as a Second Language and training in parenting, life, and work skills. The program directs young parents receiving public assistance toward long term economic self-sufficiency. While full-time, unsubsidized job placement is the ultimate goal of the program, short term objectives include increased grade or MELT levels, achievement of a GED, return to high school, enrollment in a community college or certificate program or placement into skills training, on-the-job training or paid worksite experience. Extensive support services augment the program.
YouthBuild is designed to provide low-income, out-of-school youth, aged 16-24 with an opportunity to transform their lives and become contributing partners in the community. Participants receive on-the-job, hands-on, construction skills training utilizing an actual housing rehabilitation project or new construction site in the community that helps to create quality low-income housing. Additionally, participants receive GED preparation, life skills and job readiness training, leadership skills development, support services and job placement assistance.
